João Gomes was sent off during Aston Villa’s 4–0 defeat by Brighton in the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Gomes received his dismissal five minutes before half-time at the Amex Stadium. His red card came after Brighton had already scored four times in the first 31 minutes.
Brighton’s goals came from Jack Hinshelwood, who scored twice, Maxim De Cuyper and an own goal by Victor Lindelöf. The four-goal first half put the result beyond doubt before the interval.
Gomes became the first player dismissed in the first half of his Premier League debut since Queens Park Rangers’ Samba Diakité in 2012. Villa also started the match without Ollie Watkins, whose absence followed reported transfer interest.
