Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelöf scored an own goal in Brighton’s 4–0 win on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Brighton defeated Aston Villa 4–0 on 23 August 2026, scoring all four goals during the first 31 minutes. Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in just 79 seconds, while Maxim De Cuyper added another goal before Lindelöf’s own goal completed the rapid first-half burst.
Villa’s afternoon became even harder when João Gomes was sent off five minutes before half-time. Brighton did not add to the score after the interval, but the result still became the biggest home win of the opening round.
Brighton’s four-goal first half joined a rare Premier League list. They became only the fourth club to score four first-half goals in a Matchweek 1 fixture, following Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United and Liverpool.
