Edward Kenway is the Welsh privateer who becomes an Assassin in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Edward begins the story as a privateer seeking wealth and status in the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century. After taking the identity of an Assassin, he becomes entangled in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars while continuing to pursue his own ambitions.
His ship, the Jackdaw, is central to the game. Players sail through the West Indies, attack forts, hunt sea creatures, explore islands, and encounter historical pirates including Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny.
Edward is also part of the wider Kenway family. He is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Connor, linking Black Flag to Assassin's Creed III. The game was released in 2013 and is especially known for its sailing and naval combat.
