Which Assassin's Creed game first takes the series to ancient Egypt?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Origins is the first game in the series set in ancient Egypt.

Released in 2017, Origins takes place primarily during the first century BCE, near the end of the Ptolemaic period. Its protagonist, Bayek of Siwa, is a Medjay who becomes involved in the events that lead to the formation of the Hidden Ones, the forerunners of the Assassin Brotherhood.

The game depicts regions including Siwa, Alexandria, Memphis, and the Giza pyramid complex. Its story includes historical figures such as Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar, while its fictional order conflict is woven into the political struggles of the era.

Origins is often remembered as a major redesign of the series. It introduced stronger role-playing systems, character levels, equipment rarity, and a large open world. Odyssey later moved the timeline back to fifth-century BCE Greece, but it was not the first ancient-world entry.
