Which Asian country uses the top-level internet domain .am?

The story behind the answer

The Asian country that uses the top-level internet domain .am is Armenia. The suffix is Armenia’s country-code top-level domain, introduced on 26 August 1994 and managed by the Armenia Network Information Centre, or AMNIC.

The domain is intended for entities connected with Armenia, but registration is available internationally. Its two letters have also made it attractive for creative domain names. For example, Instagr.am used the Armenian extension as part of its brand name, while other sites have used .am to suggest “AM” radio or words ending in “am.”

A common mix-up is assuming .am refers to America or Afghanistan. Country-code domains are generally based on standardized country or territory codes, and Afghanistan uses .af. Armenia also has a second national domain, .հայ, written in the Armenian script and launched for Armenian-language domain names in the 2010s.

Armenia is a landlocked South Caucasus country bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey. Its capital, Yerevan, is also the headquarters of the organization that administers the .am registry.
