Ulaanbaatar is the capital of which landlocked Asian country?

The story behind the answer

Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia, the landlocked country between Russia and China.

The city lies in north-central Mongolia in a valley on the Tuul River, at an elevation of roughly 1,350 metres. It is Mongolia’s political, cultural and economic centre, and its population represents a large share of the country’s total population.

Ulaanbaatar began in 1639 as a mobile Buddhist monastic centre. The settlement moved many times before reaching its present location in 1778. It became Mongolia’s capital in 1924, when the newly established Mongolian People’s Republic renamed it Ulaanbaatar, meaning “Red Hero.”

Older English-language sources may call the city Urga or Ulan Bator. Those names refer to the same place, not different capitals. Ulaanbaatar is also famous for its severe winters and is often described as the world’s coldest national capital by average annual temperature.
