Seoul is the capital and largest city of which Asian country?
Answer
South Korea
Answer
South Korea
Seoul is the capital and largest city of South Korea.
The city sits along the Han River in the northwestern part of the Korean Peninsula. Its strategic location helped it become a major political and commercial centre, especially after the Joseon dynasty made it the royal capital in 1394. Seoul remained the country’s seat of government through Korea’s modern transformation.
Seoul was known as Hanseong during the Joseon period and was later widely called Keijo under Japanese rule. After the division of Korea in 1945, it became the capital of South Korea. North Korea’s capital is Pyongyang, a common source of confusion in quizzes about Korean geography.
The name “Seoul” simply means “capital” in Korean. The wider Seoul Capital Area, including Incheon and much of Gyeonggi Province, contains more than half of South Korea’s population and is the country’s dominant economic region.
