Naypyidaw has been the capital of Myanmar since 2005.
Myanmar’s military government officially moved the administrative capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw on 6 November 2005. The new city was built inland near Pyinmana, roughly in the centre of the country, giving the government a more strategically located seat than coastal Yangon.
Naypyidaw is an extensively planned city known for broad multilane roads, separated government zones and unusually low population density. Its official name, Nay Pyi Taw, can be translated as “abode of the king” or “royal capital.” The city’s name was publicly announced in 2006.
Yangon remains Myanmar’s largest and best-known city, and it continues to be the country’s commercial centre. That distinction causes a frequent mix-up: Yangon is the former capital and major business hub, while Naypyidaw is the administrative and political capital. Government ministries, the national parliament and the presidential complex are located there.
