Which Asian country is the world's most sparsely populated sovereign state?

The story behind the answer

Mongolia is the world’s most sparsely populated sovereign state. Its huge land area and small population produce an exceptionally low population density, with vast stretches of steppe, desert and mountain country between settlements.

Modern Mongolia covers about 1.56 million square kilometres but has only around 3.5 million people. Most residents live in or around Ulaanbaatar, the capital, while many rural Mongolians maintain traditions connected to pastoral livestock herding. The Gobi Desert occupies much of the south, and grasslands dominate the central and eastern plateau.

This low density is closely linked to Mongolia’s geography and history. Nomadic societies developed around mobile herding rather than dense agricultural towns, and the harsh continental climate limits farming. Winter “dzud” conditions, severe cold or heavy snow, can threaten herds and rural livelihoods.

Mongolia is sometimes confused with Kazakhstan because Kazakhstan is also very large and lightly populated. Kazakhstan has more people and a higher overall density. Western Sahara can rank lower in some comparisons, but it is generally treated as a partially recognized territory rather than a fully recognized sovereign state.
