Which Asian country has Angkor Wat pictured on its national flag?

The story behind the answer

The Asian country with Angkor Wat pictured on its national flag is Cambodia.

Cambodia’s flag has a broad red central band between two blue bands, with a white depiction of Angkor Wat outlined in black at the center. The temple image is not merely decorative: it represents Cambodia’s cultural heritage and is one of the most recognizable national symbols in Southeast Asia.

The current design was first adopted in 1948 and readopted in 1993, when Cambodia’s monarchy was restored. Angkor Wat itself was built in the 12th century under the Khmer Empire, probably during the reign of King Suryavarman II. It began as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and later became an important Buddhist site.

Cambodia is unusual because its national flag displays a building. Historical Cambodian flags also frequently retained an Angkor Wat design, although the temple’s color, shape and surrounding field changed under different governments. The flag should not be confused with those of Myanmar, Laos or Thailand, none of which feature the temple.
