Which artificial-intelligence research division did Facebook establish in 2013?

The story behind the answer

Facebook established Facebook AI Research, commonly called FAIR, in 2013.

FAIR was created to advance artificial-intelligence research and to publish work that could benefit the wider scientific and engineering community. Yann LeCun, a leading researcher in convolutional neural networks, became its first director. The group worked on areas including computer vision, natural-language processing, machine learning and robotics.

The division helped establish Facebook as a major industrial research participant in modern AI. Its work included advances in image recognition, recommendation systems, language technology and open-source machine-learning tools. Facebook also operated applied AI teams focused on deploying research in products.

FAIR is sometimes confused with Meta’s broader product-engineering organizations or with PyTorch, the machine-learning framework developed by Facebook’s AI research and engineering teams. FAIR is the research division itself, not a software library.
