Which architect designed Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Tower?
Answer
Norman Foster
Answer
Norman Foster
Norman Foster designed Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Tower.
Completed in 1997, the tower was developed as the headquarters of Commerzbank in Frankfurt’s banking district. It reaches 259 metres, or 300 metres including its antenna, and was briefly the tallest building in Europe after completion.
Foster’s design is noted for its environmentally conscious features. Four-storey sky gardens spiral around the building, bringing greenery and natural ventilation into the office environment. The triangular plan also places a central atrium between the building’s office wings.
The tower is sometimes confused with Frankfurt’s Messeturm, another famous Foster-associated European high-rise? In fact, Messeturm was designed by Helmut Jahn. Commerzbank Tower’s combination of gardens, daylight, and ventilation made it an influential example of high-rise sustainable design.
