Which architect designed Dubai's Burj Al Arab skyscraper?
Answer
Tom Wright
Answer
Tom Wright
Tom Wright designed Dubai's Burj Al Arab skyscraper.
Wright was an architect with the British practice Atkins when he led the design of the hotel. The building was commissioned for Dubai and was developed on an artificial island about 280 metres from Jumeirah Beach, giving it a dramatic position in the Persian Gulf.
Its profile was conceived to resemble the sail of a dhow, a traditional Arabian sailing vessel. The structure rises 321 metres, although most of that height is not occupied guest space. The hotel opened in 1999 and became one of Dubai's most recognisable landmarks.
A common mix-up is assigning the project to Adrian Smith, who is associated with the design of Burj Khalifa. Burj Al Arab is also frequently called a skyscraper even though it functions primarily as a luxury hotel, with its height and distinctive tower form making it part of Dubai's famous skyline.
