Which architect designed Chicago’s Aqua skyscraper?

The story behind the answer

Jeanne Gang designed Chicago’s Aqua skyscraper.

Aqua was designed by Studio Gang, the architecture practice founded by Jeanne Gang. Completed in 2009, the 82-storey tower stands in Lakeshore East and combines hotel rooms, apartments, condominiums, and offices.

Its most recognizable feature is the series of irregularly projecting balconies that wrap around the building. These concrete slabs create a rippling façade, provide outdoor space, and produce varied views for residents. Their changing shapes also help break up the tower’s large surface.

Aqua became one of the best-known early projects associated with Jeanne Gang. It is sometimes mistaken for a Santiago Calatrava project because both architects are associated with sculptural buildings, but Aqua’s architect was Gang.
