Which ancient Mesopotamian epic features a flood survivor named Utnapishtim?

The story behind the answer

The Epic of Gilgamesh features the flood survivor Utnapishtim.

In the eleventh tablet of the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh how the god Ea warned him about a devastating flood. Utnapishtim built a large boat, preserved living creatures and skilled people, and survived when the waters overwhelmed the land. The episode is one of the best-known ancient Mesopotamian flood narratives.

Its resemblance to the Noah story has attracted extensive comparison. Both accounts include divine warning, a specially built vessel, preservation of life, birds sent to check the waters, and a sacrifice after landing. They are not identical, however: the names, gods, wording, theology, and narrative details differ.

The Epic of Gilgamesh survives in Akkadian cuneiform tablets, with important copies associated with the library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh. The flood survivor’s name is Utnapishtim in the standard Babylonian version.
