Which ancient Mesopotamian epic contains a Flood story in its eleventh tablet?

The story behind the answer

The Epic of Gilgamesh contains a Flood story in its eleventh tablet.

In Tablet XI, Gilgamesh hears Utnapishtim recount how the god Ea warned him about a catastrophic flood. Utnapishtim built a boat, preserved living creatures and his family, and survived the storm. He later released birds to search for dry land, a sequence that invites comparison with the Genesis narrative.

The epic is one of the best-known works of ancient Mesopotamian literature. Its surviving versions were written in cuneiform on clay tablets, with the Standard Babylonian version associated with the library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh. The Flood episode also draws on older Mesopotamian traditions, particularly the Atrahasis story.

The Iliad and Odyssey are Greek epics attributed to Homer, while the Aeneid is a Roman epic by Virgil. None contains the specific Mesopotamian Flood account found in Tablet XI.
