Which America250 education program asks students in grades 3–12, “What does America mean to you?”

The story behind the answer

America’s Field Trip is the America250 education program that asks students in grades 3–12, “What does America mean to you?”

The nationwide contest invites students to submit original artwork or writing responding to that prompt. It is designed to bring young people into the Semiquincentennial through personal reflections on American history, communities, ideals, and experiences.

The program offers more than a classroom exercise. First-place students can receive special field-trip experiences at notable historic, cultural, or natural sites, while other awardees may receive monetary prizes. America250 has described the contest as a multi-year program leading up to and through the 2026 anniversary.

The name can be confused with other America250 initiatives. America Gives focuses on volunteer service, Our American Story collects personal histories, and America’s Soundtrack explores music connected with American life. America’s Field Trip is specifically the student contest built around the question about what America means to them.
