Which album gave Beyoncé her first Grammy for Album of the Year as a solo artist?

The story behind the answer

Cowboy Carter gave Beyoncé her first Grammy for Album of the Year as a solo artist.

Cowboy Carter is Beyoncé’s eighth studio album, released on March 29, 2024. It is the second act in a planned trilogy that began with Renaissance. The album explores country, Americana, rock, blues, soul, and pop while examining the history and presence of Black artists in country music.

At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in 2025, Cowboy Carter won Album of the Year. The victory was Beyoncé’s first in that category as a solo artist, despite her many earlier nominations. The album also won Best Country Album, making her the first Black woman to win that Grammy category.

The result is sometimes confused with Beyoncé’s earlier Grammy success for albums such as Lemonade or Renaissance. Those projects received major nominations and wins, but neither won Album of the Year. Cowboy Carter also includes “Texas Hold ’Em,” which became her first country-format No. 1 single.
