Metallica's sequel “The Unforgiven II” appears on the album Reload.
The original “The Unforgiven” was released on Metallica's 1991 self-titled album, widely known as The Black Album. Its title and theme later inspired two additional songs: “The Unforgiven II” on Reload and “The Unforgiven III” on Death Magnetic.
This sequence is easy to mix up because Load and Reload were created from the same broad period of songwriting and share a related visual identity. However, “The Unforgiven II” is specifically a Reload track, while “The Unforgiven III” came much later, in 2008.
The original song was issued as the second single from Metallica in 1991. It explores an individual's struggle against people who attempt to control or subjugate him. The later songs continue the naming pattern without being simple musical copies of the first track.
