Which Alaskan peninsula contains Katmai National Park and extends southwest from mainland Alaska?

The story behind the answer

The Alaska Peninsula contains Katmai National Park and extends southwest from mainland Alaska.

The Alaska Peninsula is a long volcanic landform in southwestern Alaska. It separates Bristol Bay, part of the Bering Sea, from the Pacific Ocean and extends toward the Aleutian Islands. The Aleutian Range runs along much of its length and includes numerous active volcanoes.

Katmai National Park and Preserve occupies part of the peninsula’s Pacific side and is famous for the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and large brown bears gathering at Brooks Falls. The 1912 eruption of Novarupta created the volcanic valley, one of the largest eruptions of the twentieth century.

The Alaska Peninsula should not be confused with the Kenai Peninsula, which lies farther east near Anchorage, or the Seward Peninsula, which projects westward toward Russia.
