Cameroon reached the quarter-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Cameroon stunned the football world by opening the tournament with a 1–0 victory over defending champions Argentina. They then advanced from their group and defeated Colombia 2–1 after extra time in the round of 16, with veteran striker Roger Milla scoring twice.
In the quarter-final, Cameroon led England 2–1 after goals from Emmanuel Kunde and Eugène Ekéké. England eventually won 3–2 after extra time, with Gary Lineker converting two penalties. Cameroon therefore became the first African team to reach a World Cup quarter-final.
Morocco also made history in 1986 by becoming the first African team to win a World Cup group, while Ghana and Nigeria did not reach the 1990 quarter-finals. Cameroon’s run remains one of the tournament’s defining underdog stories.
