Which African capital's name means "new flower" in Amharic?

The story behind the answer

Addis Ababa is the African capital whose Amharic name means “new flower.”

The name comes from the Amharic words Addis, meaning “new,” and Ababa, meaning “flower.” The city was founded in the late 19th century by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul. Taytu is traditionally credited with choosing the name after seeing the area’s flowering vegetation, especially its mimosa trees.

The settlement grew around hot springs at the foot of the Entoto Mountains. Menelik’s court moved there from Entoto, and Addis Ababa became the permanent imperial capital around 1889–1891. Its highland location helped give it a mild climate compared with many lower-lying parts of Ethiopia. A common spelling variant is Addis Abeba, reflecting a closer transliteration from Amharic. The city is also home to the African Union headquarters, which has helped earn it the nickname “capital of Africa.”
