Which African capital is Angola's largest city and main port?

The story behind the answer

Which African capital is Angola’s largest city and main port? The answer is Luanda.

Luanda is Angola’s capital, largest city and principal seaport. It lies on the Atlantic coast in northwestern Angola and serves as the country’s administrative, economic and cultural centre. The Port of Luanda is Angola’s largest port and supports trade in petroleum products, manufactured goods and other cargo.

Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais founded the city in 1576 as São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda. During the colonial period, Luanda became a major Portuguese base and an important centre in the Atlantic slave trade, especially in connections with Brazil. Its port later handled exports including coffee, cotton, ivory and other products.

Luanda’s population expanded sharply during and after Angola’s civil war, which lasted from 1975 to 2002, as people fled fighting elsewhere. That growth placed heavy pressure on housing, roads and public services. The city is sometimes confused with Benguela or Lobito, both important Angolan coastal cities, but neither is the national capital or the country’s largest urban centre.
