Which African capital is the seat of Ethiopia's federal government?

The story behind the answer

Which African capital is the seat of Ethiopia’s federal government? The answer is Addis Ababa.

Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s capital and the seat of its federal government. It is the country’s political, administrative and diplomatic centre, housing the prime minister’s office, federal ministries, parliament and other national institutions.

The city was founded in the late nineteenth century by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul. Its name is commonly translated from Amharic as “new flower.” Its highland location, at roughly 2,400 metres above sea level, gives it a cooler climate than many other African capitals.

Addis Ababa also has significance well beyond Ethiopia. It hosts the headquarters of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, making it a major centre for continental diplomacy. A common confusion is with Dire Dawa, Ethiopia’s other chartered city; Dire Dawa has important regional and commercial functions, but Addis Ababa is the national capital and federal seat.
