Which African capital was historically built on seven hills near Lake Victoria?

The story behind the answer

Which African capital was historically built on seven hills near Lake Victoria? Kampala was. Uganda’s capital began as a settlement spread across seven prominent hills north of Lake Victoria and has since expanded far beyond them.

The hills were part of the political heartland of Buganda, whose kings established royal capitals, or kibugas, on elevated sites. Kampala’s early colonial development centered on Old Kampala Hill, where Frederick Lugard established Fort Lugard in 1890. Other traditionally counted hills include Mengo, Kibuli, Namirembe, Lubaga, Nsambya and Nakasero.

The city’s name is commonly connected with impala antelope. A local expression meaning “hill of the impala” was adapted into the name Kampala after the British established their settlement in the area.

The seven-hill description is historical rather than a modern boundary rule. Kampala now covers many more hills, valleys and wetlands, reaching toward Lake Victoria. That expansion is why lists of the original seven sometimes vary, particularly over whether Kasubi or Makerere is included.
