Which African capital is home to the African Union headquarters?

The story behind the answer

Which African capital is home to the African Union headquarters? Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is home to the African Union headquarters.

The African Union's administrative headquarters are in Addis Ababa, where the African Union Commission—the organization's secretariat and executive branch—is based. Addis Ababa was a natural diplomatic centre because it hosted the Organisation of African Unity, the AU's predecessor, founded there in 1963 by 32 African governments.

The modern African Union Conference Center and Office Complex opened in 2012. Built with major Chinese funding, the complex includes a 20-story office tower and a plenary hall accommodating roughly 2,500 people. It hosts major summits and other continental meetings.

The African Union itself was launched in 2002 to replace the OAU, but Addis Ababa retained its central institutional role. A common mix-up is assuming every AU body is located there: the Pan-African Parliament is based in Midrand, South Africa, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights is based in Banjul, The Gambia. Addis Ababa is also home to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, reinforcing its reputation as a major diplomatic capital.
