Which African capital contains the Casbah, a UNESCO-listed citadel?

The story behind the answer

Which African capital contains the Casbah, a UNESCO-listed citadel? Algiers. The Casbah of Algiers is the historic medina and old town at the heart of Algeria’s capital, rising above the Mediterranean harbor. Its name comes from the Arabic word for citadel, though the UNESCO-listed area encompasses the wider historic urban district as well as the fortress overlooking it.

The site has ancient roots, with Punic and Roman connections, while its present urban form developed under the Zirid dynasty from the 10th century onward. Ottoman-era palaces, mosques, fountains, hammams, winding lanes, and courtyard houses give the Casbah its distinctive Maghrebi character. Its steep hillside layout also made it a defensible settlement.

UNESCO inscribed the Casbah of Algiers as a World Heritage Site in 1992 under criteria recognizing its cultural influence and traditional urban form. A common mix-up is to treat “Casbah” as only one building; in Algiers it commonly refers to the whole historic quarter, whose upper citadel is one of its best-known landmarks. The district also played a major symbolic role during Algeria’s struggle against French colonial rule.
