Which actor portrayed Mickey Goldmill in the Rocky films?

The story behind the answer

Burgess Meredith portrayed Mickey Goldmill in the Rocky films.

Mickey is Rocky Balboa’s longtime boxing trainer and the owner of the Mighty Mick’s Boxing Gym in Philadelphia. When Rocky first meets him in Rocky (1976), Mickey is a veteran trainer who initially doubts Rocky’s prospects but eventually agrees to prepare him for his unlikely title fight with Apollo Creed.

Meredith played Mickey in Rocky, Rocky II, and Rocky III. Mickey dies during Rocky III, but Meredith returned through flashback material in Rocky V and archival footage in later franchise appearances. His gravelly voice, blunt coaching style, and nickname “Mighty Mick” made the character one of the series’ most recognizable figures.

The answer is sometimes confused with the actors who played other boxing characters. Lee J. Cobb played trainer Billy Golemb, Jack Palance played villain Curly, and Ernest Borgnine appeared in unrelated boxing roles. Meredith’s performance in the first Rocky earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
