Brandt is introduced as an IMF analyst who joins Ethan Hunt’s field team after the organization is disavowed under a policy known as Ghost Protocol. Although he initially presents himself as a technical officer, the film gradually reveals that he has substantial field experience and a complicated connection to Ethan’s past.

Renner returned as Brandt in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. The character’s role is different from that of Benji Dunn, played by Simon Pegg, and Luther Stickell, played by Ving Rhames. Those recurring teammates have distinct technical and operational histories within the IMF.
