Gert Fröbe played villain Auric Goldfinger in the James Bond film Goldfinger.
Released in 1964, Goldfinger stars Sean Connery as Bond and centers on the wealthy gold dealer Auric Goldfinger. Goldfinger plans to attack Fort Knox and contaminate the United States Bullion Depository’s gold reserve, increasing the value of his own holdings. The character’s name reflects his obsession with gold.
Fröbe was a German actor, but his English dialogue was dubbed by Michael Collins because his spoken English was considered unsuitable for the production. This has caused occasional confusion about who played the role. Fröbe nevertheless supplied the character’s physical performance and screen presence. Goldfinger also introduced the memorable henchman Oddjob and made the Aston Martin DB5 an iconic Bond vehicle.
