Which actor played Ethan Hunt’s mentor Jim Phelps in the 1996 Mission: Impossible film?

The story behind the answer

Jon Voight played Jim Phelps in the 1996 film Mission: Impossible.

Jim Phelps is the leader of Ethan Hunt’s IMF team at the beginning of the movie. The character originated in the 1960s television series, where he was played by Peter Graves. The film uses the familiar name but places the character in a new story and changes his role within the plot.

In the movie, the Prague mission ends with nearly the entire team dead, and Ethan becomes the apparent lone survivor. Ethan later learns that the mission was designed to expose a mole inside the IMF, leading him to investigate the people closest to him.

Jon Voight’s casting is sometimes confused with actors from later films. Anthony Hopkins appears as the IMF director Swanbeck in Mission: Impossible 2, while Alec Baldwin plays IMF Secretary Alan Hunley from Rogue Nation onward. The film’s reinterpretation of Jim Phelps was one of its major departures from the television source.
