Cillian Murphy played Dr. Jonathan Crane, also known as Scarecrow, in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.
Crane is a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who secretly uses fear toxins to manipulate victims. Murphy’s performance presents him as a controlled and clinical villain whose professional identity contrasts with his masked alter ego.
Batman Begins was released in 2005 and served as the starting point for Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Christian Bale played Bruce Wayne, while Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Liam Neeson filled important supporting roles. Murphy’s Scarecrow is the principal surviving antagonist from the film’s first half and returns briefly in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
A common mix-up is identifying Murphy with another Nolan villain. Tom Hardy played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, while Heath Ledger played the Joker in The Dark Knight. Murphy later became the lead actor in Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
