Jay-Z played Beyoncé’s love interest in the 2002 music video for “’03 Bonnie & Clyde.”
The song was recorded by Jay-Z featuring Beyoncé and appeared on Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse. It reimagined the criminal-couple imagery associated with Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow as a modern romantic partnership. The music video used desert and road imagery and presented the two performers as a glamorous contemporary pair.
“’03 Bonnie & Clyde” became an important early collaboration between Beyoncé and Jay-Z. It reached the top ten in several countries and helped establish their musical partnership before Beyoncé’s solo album Dangerously in Love arrived in 2003.
The pair later married in 2008 and continued collaborating on songs including “Crazy in Love,” “Drunk in Love,” and “Part II (On the Run).” The video’s co-starring performer is sometimes confused with other major hip-hop or R&B collaborators, but Jay-Z is the credited male lead and recording artist on the track.
