Which actor first played James Bond in an official film after Sean Connery?

The story behind the answer

George Lazenby was the first actor to play James Bond in an official film after Sean Connery.

Lazenby took over the role in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, released in 1969. Connery had portrayed Bond in five Eon films from Dr. No through You Only Live Twice. Lazenby’s single performance therefore marked the first recasting of the central role within the official film series.

An Australian model before entering films, Lazenby was selected after screen tests and extensive auditions. The production paired him with Diana Rigg as Tracy di Vicenzo and Telly Savalas as Blofeld. Peter Hunt directed the film.

The succession is sometimes misstated because Connery returned for Diamonds Are Forever in 1971. That return did not erase Lazenby’s place in the sequence: Lazenby remains the first replacement Bond in the official Eon series. Roger Moore then became the permanent successor, beginning with Live and Let Die in 1973.
