None of the 2026–27 Premier League opening-weekend matches was played between two promoted clubs.
The three promoted teams were Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. Each faced an established Premier League club in the opening round: Coventry visited Arsenal, Ipswich hosted Sunderland, and Hull hosted Manchester United.
This meant the promoted sides were distributed across three different fixtures rather than meeting one another immediately. Hull and Ipswich won their matches, while Coventry lost to Arsenal. The round therefore included three promoted-team fixtures but no promoted-versus-promoted contest.
The distinction matters because all three clubs were newcomers to the season’s 20-team lineup, but they did not enter the campaign against each other. Coventry had been away from the Premier League for 25 years, Ipswich for one year, and Hull for nine years.
