Which 2026–27 Premier League opening-weekend fixture was the only draw?

The story behind the answer

Newcastle United versus Liverpool was the only draw of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

The match ended 2–2 at St James’ Park on Sunday, 23 August 2026. It was one of three Sunday fixtures and the only opening-round game in which the teams shared the points.

The other nine fixtures all produced winners: Arsenal, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Everton, Leeds United, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Chelsea. Newcastle and Liverpool therefore began the campaign with one point each rather than three.

The game was also the highest-profile draw of the opening round, pairing Newcastle United with Liverpool. It can be confused with Manchester City versus Bournemouth, which was a 2–1 home win, or Ipswich Town versus Sunderland, which ended 2–1 to the hosts. The 2–2 score contributed four goals to the weekend total.
