Coventry City returned to the Premier League after the longest absence among the 2026–27 promoted clubs.
Coventry had been away from the Premier League for 25 years before beginning the 2026–27 season. Their return came alongside Ipswich Town and Hull City, who also regained top-flight status after shorter absences. Coventry’s gap was described as the longest absence by a previous Premier League club in the competition’s history at that point.
The club marked its return with an opening-day away trip to defending champions Arsenal. Coventry lost that match 3–0, but their promotion still made the fixture historically notable because it immediately reunited the club with English football’s top division.
A common mix-up is identifying Hull City, who also returned after several seasons away. Ipswich Town’s absence was shorter still. Leeds United were already members of the Premier League before the 2026–27 season and therefore were not one of the newly promoted teams.
