Which 2021 Alice Hoffman novel is Practical Magic 2 based on?

Practical Magic 2 is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic.

The Book of Magic is part of Hoffman’s Owens family book series and is identified as the final book in the original series. Producer Denise Di Novi stated in July 2024 that the sequel would be based on that novel.

The film is not based directly on the 1995 novel Practical Magic, even though that earlier book inspired the 1998 movie. Hoffman later expanded the family’s literary history with The Rules of Magic, a prequel published in 2017, and Magic Lessons, another prequel published in 2020.

The film adaptation does not require every detail from the novel to appear unchanged on screen. Its published premise focuses on the Owens family, the origins of their magic, Kylie’s abilities, and the curse affecting their lineage. The novel connection explains why the sequel can draw on a much broader family history.
