Lemonade is the 2016 Beyoncé visual album exploring Black identity, relationships, and betrayal.
The album was released on April 23, 2016, following an HBO premiere of its accompanying film, also titled Lemonade. Its songs move through multiple musical styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, soul, hip-hop, and reggae.
The project is organized around stages of emotional experience, including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption. Its lyrics and imagery connect personal conflict with broader histories of African American women and culture.
Lemonade includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Daddy Lessons.” It was acclaimed for its ambitious visual storytelling and received Grammy nominations across major categories. The album is sometimes described simply as a breakup record, but its themes are broader, combining intimate autobiography with family history, race, heritage, and resilience.
