Which 2001 television film marked Beyoncé’s acting debut?

The story behind the answer

Carmen: A Hip Hopera marked Beyoncé’s acting debut in 2001.

The MTV television film is a contemporary musical adaptation of Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen. Beyoncé played Carmen Brown, a young woman whose story is transferred into a modern setting and told through hip-hop and R&B performance. Mekhi Phifer played the male lead, while Robert Townsend directed the film.

The project preceded Beyoncé’s best-known theatrical roles, including Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers in Goldmember and Deena Jones in Dreamgirls. Carmen: A Hip Hopera is therefore an important early point in her screen career, even though it was made for television rather than released as a conventional cinema film. It also connected her existing strengths in singing, dance, and performance with scripted acting.
