Which 2001 MTV television musical marked Beyoncé’s acting debut?

The story behind the answer

Carmen: A Hip Hopera marked Beyoncé’s acting debut in 2001.

The MTV television film premiered on May 8, 2001. It is a modern musical adaptation of Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen, relocating the story into a contemporary setting and using hip-hop and R&B influences.

Beyoncé played Carmen Brown, opposite Mekhi Phifer as Hill, a character based on Don José. The production also featured Mos Def and Wyclef Jean. Its cast and musical format helped introduce Beyoncé to audiences beyond her work with Destiny’s Child.

Beyoncé later appeared in films including Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fighting Temptations, Dreamgirls, and Cadillac Records. Dreamgirls is sometimes incorrectly identified as her acting debut because it was her most prominent early film role, but Carmen: A Hip Hopera came first.
