The studio was located in Los Angeles, California, and the main recording sessions ran from October 1990 into June 1991. One on One was known for its large rooms and strong drum sound, qualities that suited the dense but spacious production Metallica wanted for the record.

The band also spent about a week at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia. Additional overdubbing and mixing took place at A&M Studios in Hollywood. These other locations sometimes lead to the mistaken idea that the whole album was recorded in Vancouver or Hollywood.

One on One later became associated with the name Extasy Recording Studios after it was purchased by Yoshiki in 1992. The facility hosted recordings by other notable acts, including Alice in Chains, Kiss, and Fiona Apple. Metallica's long stay there was part of an unusually extended and difficult production process.
