Where did Apollo 11 make the first crewed lunar landing?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 11 made the first crewed lunar landing in the Sea of Tranquility, a broad basalt plain on the Moon’s near side.

The lunar module Eagle touched down on July 20, 1969, with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard. The landing site was selected because its relatively smooth terrain offered a practical approach area for the first attempt.

The site’s name comes from the Latin designation Mare Tranquillitatis, meaning Sea of Tranquility. It is not an ocean of liquid water; lunar maria are dark plains formed mainly by ancient volcanic basalt. The landing area is also called the Tranquility Base site, after Armstrong’s radio report.
