The original Practical Magic film was released in 1998.
The film starred Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens and Nicole Kidman as Gillian Owens, two sisters from a family of witches. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing played their aunts, Jet and Frances, who also return in Practical Magic 2.
The 1998 movie was based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel Practical Magic. The sequel is therefore connected to both the earlier film and Hoffman’s later literary work, but 1998 identifies the release year of the first cinematic adaptation.
Practical Magic 2 continues that movie continuity with the original sisters and aunts returning. Its story is set decades after the first film and introduces a new crisis involving Sally’s daughters and the origins of the Owens family’s magic.
