The first Glastonbury Festival was held in 1970.
It took place on 19 September at Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset, under the name Pop, Blues & Folk Festival. Farmer Michael Eavis organised it after attending the 1970 Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music, where Led Zeppelin performed. About 1,500 people attended, and tickets cost £1, which included free milk from the farm.
The original bill was expected to feature The Kinks and Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, but both acts were replaced at short notice. Tyrannosaurus Rex, the acoustic duo later known as T. Rex, became the main attraction. Other performers included Stackridge, Al Stewart, Quintessence and Steamhammer.
A common mix-up is 1971, when the event was renamed the Glastonbury Fayre and expanded into a larger, free festival. There was also an unplanned event in 1978, but 1970 remains the festival's recognised beginning.
