James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water was released in cinemas in 2022.
The film is the sequel to Avatar and continues the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri years after the first film. Its plot moves beyond Pandora’s forests to ocean environments and the coastal communities of the reef-dwelling Metkayina Na’vi.
The sequel arrived 13 years after Avatar, which had opened in 2009. Its long development period included work on underwater performance capture and the creation of new digital characters, environments and aquatic movement systems.
The film premiered in December 2022 and became one of the highest-grossing films in history. It also received Academy Award nominations, winning for visual effects. Its title is sometimes shortened to Avatar 2, but The Way of Water is the official subtitle.
