What were the three levels of Noah’s Ark called in Genesis?
Answer
Lower, second, and third decks
Answer
Lower, second, and third decks
Genesis describes Noah’s Ark as having a lower deck, a second deck, and a third deck.
Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make the ark with lower, second, and third levels. The same verse also mentions a window and a door, but it does not provide a detailed deck plan, stairway arrangement, or placement for particular animals.
Many illustrations label the levels “lower,” “middle,” and “upper,” which communicates the structure but is not the most literal wording of several English translations. The text’s purpose is to establish a multi-level enclosed vessel rather than to give modern naval architectural specifications.
The three-level description appears alongside the ark’s dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Because the length of a biblical cubit is uncertain, converting those dimensions into metres or feet produces estimates rather than one fixed measurement. The deck count itself, however, is explicit in Genesis.
