Twitter traded under the stock-market ticker symbol TWTR when it went public in 2013.
The company listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange in November 2013. Using a ticker symbol allowed investors and financial news services to identify Twitter’s publicly traded stock in market data and trading systems.
The symbol was chosen as a compact market identifier derived from the company’s name. It was not the same thing as Twitter’s website address, the @ symbol used for usernames, or the service’s internal project name from its early development.
After Elon Musk acquired Twitter and the company was taken private in 2022, TWTR no longer represented a publicly traded Twitter stock. The later corporate rebranding to X also changed the company’s public identity, but this question concerns the 2013 listing.
