The Xbox One’s original internal development codename was Durango.
Microsoft used “Durango” during the console’s development before revealing the public Xbox One name in 2013. Development codenames are common in the technology industry because they let teams discuss unreleased hardware without using its final marketing identity.
Durango should not be confused with “Project Scorpio,” which was the codename for the later Xbox One X. “Project Natal” was the development name for the motion-sensing technology that became Kinect, while “Anaconda” and “Lockhart” were later associated with Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S development.
The Xbox One launched in November 2013 as the successor to the Xbox 360. Its original product plan emphasized games, television, voice control, and Kinect integration, although Microsoft changed several policies before launch, including requirements related to online connectivity and used games.
