The Xbox 360’s first official retail dashboard interface was called Blades.
The Blades interface organized the Xbox 360 dashboard into horizontal sections for media, games, Xbox Live, and system settings. Its tabbed design was the console’s original user interface when the Xbox 360 launched in 2005.
Microsoft later replaced Blades with the New Xbox Experience, commonly abbreviated NXE, in 2008. Subsequent dashboard redesigns adopted visual styles influenced by Microsoft’s Metro design language. Snap was a later Xbox One multitasking feature, not the Xbox 360’s original interface.
The names can be confusing because Microsoft changed the dashboard several times through system updates. “Blades” refers specifically to the launch-era arrangement, while NXE identifies the major redesign that introduced avatars and a more graphical presentation.
